Willow Voice Alternative for Mac

Willow sends your voice to the cloud by default. Resonant keeps it on your Mac — always.

Cloud-first vs. local-first

Willow Voice is a YC-backed dictation app that launched in 2025 with support for Mac, Windows, and iOS. It's fast, well-funded ($4.5M raised), and positions itself as a productivity tool for professionals.

But Willow's core architecture is cloud-first. When you speak, your audio is captured locally, transmitted to Willow's cloud servers, processed by their AI models, and the text is sent back to your device. This happens every time you dictate in the default mode.

Willow does offer an offline mode that runs local Whisper models, but it's not the default, it must be manually enabled, and feature parity with the cloud mode isn't guaranteed. The product is designed around cloud processing.

Resonant takes the opposite approach. All speech processing happens on your Mac, on Apple Silicon, using on-device AI models. There is no cloud to opt out of because there is no cloud to begin with.

The privacy question

Willow offers a “Private Mode” that it describes as a default setting. But Private Mode controls what happens to your transcripts after processing — it doesn't change the fact that your audio is sent to cloud servers for transcription in the first place.

This is an important distinction. “We don't store your data” is a policy. “Your data never leaves your device” is an architecture. Policies can change. Architectures can't.

Willow also holds SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA certifications for its enterprise tier. These are meaningful compliance markers — but they govern how data is handled on servers that your audio travels through. Resonant eliminates the question entirely: there are no servers.

The subscription trap

Willow's free tier caps you at 2,000 words per week. That's roughly 15 minutes of dictation — enough to get hooked, not enough to be useful. Their Pro plan runs $15 per month or $144 per year. There is no one-time purchase option.

Resonant is completely free. Speech processing happens on hardware you already own. There's no per-word metering, no weekly caps, no subscriptions, and no usage limits. Every feature is included from day one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Willow Voice private?

Willow Voice sends audio to cloud servers by default for processing. It offers a “Private Mode” that controls transcript retention, but audio still leaves your device in online mode. An offline mode exists but is not the default. Resonant processes all audio on-device — nothing is ever sent to a server.

Does Willow Voice work offline?

Willow Voice offers an offline mode that must be manually enabled. Its primary, default mode requires a cloud connection. Resonant is local-only by design — it works offline out of the box.

How much does Willow Voice cost?

Willow Voice offers a free tier limited to 2,000 words per week. Their Pro plan costs $15/month or $144/year. There is no one-time purchase option. Resonant is completely free with all features included.

What is a good alternative to Willow Voice?

Resonant is a local-first alternative to Willow Voice that processes all speech on-device using Apple Silicon. Unlike Willow's cloud-first approach, Resonant never sends audio to a server, works fully offline, and is completely free with no subscriptions or usage limits.
